according to sigmund feud religion is an illusion and it derives its strength from the fact that it falls in with our instinctual desires. karl marx religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of of a heartlesss world, just as it is the spiritless situation, it is the opium of the people. what marx is saying is that religion is a symptom of a disease, not the disease itself. what karl marx is saying is that opiate drug fails to fix a physical injury, it merely helps you forget pain and suffering. this may be fine up to a point, but only as long as you are also trying to solve the underlying problems causing the pain.

cont. Emile Durkheim saw religion as the concepts of the sacred as the characteristic of religion, he saw totemism as the original and simplest form of religion. according to Durkheim the analysysis of this simple form of religion could provide the building blocks for more complex religions. He asserted that moralism cannot be seperated from religion. Tylor states that religion originated as explanations to the world. and max weber says religion can be force of chsange in society.
Rudolf Otto say religion as emerging from the idea of the holy, the numinous, the mysterium tremendum et fascinans ie. fearful and fascinating mystery. and mysterium tremendum is described as the literature of religious experience abounds in references to the pains and terror.
